Green jobs are in demand. Workers want to secure employment that will challenge them intellectually, satisfy them professionally and give them a chance to embrace their eco-friendly ideals. While this seems almost impossible, the reality is that more companies are look for employees with a green mindset. If you are searching for the right position, it is important to note that there are eco-friendly jobs that don’t seem blatantly green at first glance. The following tips will help you on your search.

Understand Your Limitations

As you begin your search for employment, it is important to first look internally, and determine what you can bring to the table. At the same time, recognize the areas where you may not be as proficient. Make a list of all the green jobs that you have been thinking of submitting an application for, and see how you match up. Are there any that you just aren’t qualified for? If you were the hiring manager, would you be impressed by your resume? If you think a few of your weaknesses might stand in your way, consider what you can do about them. Is there a class that will help? What about a volunteer opportunity? Some job descriptions just scream “green” to applicants. For example, a position at an environmental organization or working with solar energy are both obviously eco-friendly careers. For example, check out the technology field. Many companies are turning to technology as a way of cutting back on their carbon footprint. Education is another possibility; in many places, teachers must incorporate environmental issues in their lessons. Even pest control is becoming more “green.” Many pest control technicians, for example, are using integrated pest management techniques in order to avoid spraying harmful chemicals.

Stay “In The Know”

Make sure you are aware of what is happening in the world, particularly as it pertains to environmental issues. You need to be able to speak intelligently in your interviews, and having the right background knowledge will get you far. Pick up a newspaper each day, and spend a few minutes reading it. Find a few environmental blogs that you like and bookmark them. If there is a particular environmental issue that you truly feel passionate about, like water conservation, make sure you follow it. You never know what you will discover as a result of your research.
